What is the Green Deal?

You may have found yourself in a catch-22 situation like this – your energy bills are too high, but you can’t afford to pay for energy saving measures such as insulation, a new boiler or solar panels. You can’t afford to pay your bills, but you can’t afford the things that would reduce your bills either. That’s where the Green Deal comes in.

The Green Deal is a UK government policy launched in October 2012 by the Department of Energy and Climate Change. It is basically a loan that is available to anyone. You can use it to pay for energy saving products, and it is paid back using the money you save on your bills. Once the loan is paid off, you can continue enjoying cheaper energy bills.

The Green Deal can be used to pay for things like:

  • Insulation (loft, cavity or external wall)
  • Draught proofing
  • Double glazing
  • Heating improvements (e.g. a new boiler)
  • Renewable energy technologies (e.g. PV solar panels)

For example, you could use Green Deal funding to get your house insulated properly, and as a result your heating bill costs £20 less per month. The amount you pay back to Green Deal each month would be no more than £20. The repayments are taken from your electricity bill.

How the Green Deal works

How the Green Deal works

The Green Deal involves 4 main steps:

Step 1: Assessment

This is carried out at your home or business by an approved Green Deal Assessor (also called a Green Deal Advisor). They will carry out a detailed survey of your home using standardised software. They will identify potential energy saving improvements and calculate the financial savings you could make. They can then recommend which improvements would be the most cost effective. The assessment may be subject to a charge.

Step2: Finance

Once your assessment has been carried out, you can take the report to one or more Green Deal Providers. They will orgainise the funding for the improvements and prepare a Green Deal Plan.

Step 3: Installation

The energy saving improvements will be carried out by an approved Green Deal Installer, such as Go Greena. Green Deal installers are vetted to ensure they meet the standards set out for the Green Deal.

Step 4: Repayment

You don’t pay the loan back as you would a normal bank loan. Instead the payments are added to your electricity bill, and your electricity provider will pass the payments on to the Green Deal provider.

For example, if you have your home insulated, and as a result you save £20 a month on your heating bill, £20 will be added to your electricity bill (although your savings will probably come from your gas bill, payments are always taken from your electricity bill. This is because not all homes have gas, but virtually everyone has electricity). Once the loan has been repaid you will no longer pay extra on your electricity bill, and you will begin enjoying the savings.

In some cases it might not be possible to put together a finance package that will cover 100% of the cost of the work, particularly if you are looking into expensive measures such as solar panels. If this is the case, you can choose to pay part of the cost upfront, and use the Green Deal to fund the rest – effectively allowing you to have work done for very cheap, if not for free.

The Green Deal “Golden Rule”

The expected financial savings must be equal to or greater than the costs attached to the energy bill, and it must be possible to pay off the loan during the lifetime of the product. You should never end up paying out more as a result of getting work done through the Green Deal.

What happens if I move house?

The Green Deal is attached to the property, not the occupant. If you move, the loan will stay with the house and will be taken up by the new occupier.

How do I apply for the Green Deal?

Before you even consider applying for the Green Deal, check to see if you can have the work done for free. Loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and external wall insulation are all available for free if a) you receive certain benefits or b) you live in a qualifying area. Book a free home energy survey here to find out if you are eligible for the funding.
